Gettysburg Area School District Free Summer Meal Program Returns

Gettysburg Area School District (GASD) will once again open its doors this summer through the Seamless Summer Food Service Program, continuing to ensure children in the community have consistent access to nutritious meals at no cost while school is out of session.

The program will run Monday through Thursday from June 17 through August 6 at Gettysburg Area Middle School, 37 Lefever St., Gettysburg.

Free breakfast and lunch will be available to all children who are 18 years old and under, as well as GASD-enrolled students with disabilities up to 21 years old. Meals are provided regardless of household income or school district residency. Adult meals cost $4.85.

In-person lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., in addition to grab-and-go breakfast pickup. Families will receive two breakfasts on Thursday to cover both Friday and the following Monday.

“This program is about meeting a basic need and supporting our community,” GASD Food Service Director Nicholas Milone said. “When children have access to healthy meals, they’re better prepared to stay active, keep learning, and return to school ready to succeed.”

The Seamless Summer Food Service Program is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Education to help children maintain proper nutrition when school is not in session.

Parents bringing children or coaches bringing student-athletes are expected to stay with the children to provide supervision.

The GASD Food Service Department continues its commitment to serving balanced, nutritious meals in a welcoming environment, with a focus on quality ingredients that meet USDA and Pennsylvania School Nutrition Program standards.

In 2025, GASD saw a 25-percent increase in participation in the program compared to the prior year.

“We are thrilled to welcome families back for another summer of meal service,” GASD Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Matzner said. “Whether it’s a returning participant or someone joining us for the first time, we look forward to serving our community and supporting local children throughout the summer months.”
