Do you have photos of Cumberland Township?  Supervisors are asking for help documenting the township’s history.

While the Cumberland Township administrative building on Fairfield Road is undergoing renovation and expansion, the Board of Supervisors is working on a project to incorporate the colorful history of the township into the newly renovated building. The project is intended to showcase the citizens and important memories of the township’s history and times that have long passed.

“There are many, many locations within the township that have been reduced to only a commemorative plaque to mark the historical significance of a piece of history that once stood at that spot,” says Township Supervisor Jeff Brauning who is spearheading the effort.  The goal is to bring those landmarks back into prominence by incorporating historical photos depicting the building from its vast and storied history.

Brauning is asking residents to sort through old photos and help locate some of the township’s forgotten homesteads, churches, schools, businesses, mills, and interesting buildings, so that they may be used to line the walls of the newly renovated township building.  According to Brauning, any  photos will do – interior, exterior, including owners and/or patrons.

“This is a chance to beautify and lend even more meaning to a place where our community gathers to decide its future,” says Brauning.  “A future that looks very bright because of our dedicated residents.”

Pictures can be submitted by mail or email.  Submissions need to include your name and any identifying information you can provide about any photos you submit.  Photos can be mailed to Cumberland Township, c/o Jeff Brauning, at 1370 Fairfield Road, Gettysburg, PA 17325, or emailed to jbrauning@cumberlandtwppa.gov.
