Adams County Residents Step Out for Health at Community Walking Event

Adams County residents laced up their shoes Wednesday afternoon for a community walk aimed at promoting health and wellness.

The event, hosted by the Adams County Physical Fitness Task Force, began at 1:00 p.m. at the Charlie Sterner Building on Long Lane in Gettysburg. Janelle Gilbert, Fitness Director of the YMCA, kicked things off with a talk on balance and posture, highlighting the benefits of practicing these skills in water.

From there, participants set out on a loop around the park, following Howard Avenue out to the Gettysburg Inner Loop Bridge before circling back along Howard and finishing on the GARA trail.

Despite earlier rain showers, the turnout was strong. Task Force Committee Chair Betsy Meyer said she hopes to see the walking program continue to grow with more volunteer support. “We’d like to expand our walks and hikes to times when people are off work and on the weekends, too,” Meyer said.

The next community walk will be held on Wednesday, September 24, at 1:00 p.m. at Amblebrook, 25 Lively Stream Way in Gettysburg. That session will feature the Interval group, which will share tips on interval walking.

For more information about the Physical Fitness Task Force or to volunteer, contact Meyer at ejmeyer99@hotmail.com. Walking trail maps are available online at healthyadamscounty.org or adamswellness.org.

Organizers encourage residents to join in the fall walking parties as a fun way to stay active and connected.
