April Is Occupational Therapy Month

What is OT? Simply said, it is a form of rehabilitation that helps people to live as independently as possible. Occupational Therapists teach people modified methods. They also show them how to use adaptive equipment to complete tasks of daily living they may otherwise struggle or not be able to complete. OTs can work in various settings, such as schools, healthcare, mental wellness, homes, private clinics, industry, hospitals, nursing homes, group homes, community centers, agencies, and more. They work with ages spanning the lifespan from babies through older adults. They help with everyday tasks such as dressing and bathing, cooking, self-feeding, wheelchair mobility, positioning, cognition, leisure exploration, emotional regulation, handwriting, proper body mechanics and joint protection, hand splinting, fine-motor skills, upper body strengthening and range-of-motion, how to safely get in and out of the tub, and caregiver training. Basically, OT helps with skills for the job of living.

Whom do OTs serve?

It is a diverse field that addresses various needs, including physical, cognitive, and emotional challenges. OT helps improve daily lives of clients as they become more independent. They may work with people who have had a stroke, amputation, fracture, burn, or many other conditions or developmental delays. Someone who has had hip surgery may need a long-handled shoehorn, reacher, and a long-handled sponge to complete self-care tasks while following special precautions given by the surgeon. An OT can provide safety tips, modifications, and education about specialized equipment for someone who has low vision. A preschooler who has difficulty transitioning to centers in the classroom may benefit by an OT creating a social story to promote smooth transitions. OTs can help people recover from an injury or illness and live more independent, fulfilling lives.

If you or your loved one may benefit from OT, talk with your doctor. A referral is needed for OT services. If you see an OT in April, be sure to thank him or her! To learn more about OT, visit aota.org.
