Biglerville Garden Club (BGC) is a small club with big ambitions for 2025! The focus for the year will be growth, celebration, and connection. In addition to monthly programs, community events, and social outings, BGC is committed to supporting Adams County students who are majoring in Horticulture, Ecology, Forestry, and other related sciences. The club has been granting scholarships to Adams County students for 50 years. This year, three $1500 scholarships will be awarded to eligible students who meet the criteria set by the club. Interested students can receive an application directly through their guidance counselor, and completed paperwork is due April 11, 2025.
This year’s planned monthly programs feature a variety of topics, including World War ll Victory Gardens and the story of Emma “Grandma” Gatewood, who completed the 2190-mile Appalachian Trail in 1955. In addition to these educational programs, members will also learn about the art of flower pounding, design a flower arrangement to swap, and make creative culinary designs.
In addition to the club’s monthly programs, members will have the opportunity to participate in the many social and community activities planned for the year. From hands-on workshops to garden visits, the club will also assist with children’s activities for Earth Day and plan a celebration of National Garden Week (June 1-7) at the Harbaugh-Thomas Library in Biglerville. BGC’s annual plant sale is scheduled for Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to noon at the National Apple Museum in Biglerville.
An exciting new venture for the club will be soliciting funds to purchase a Blue Star Memorial for the Biglerville Borough. A Blue Star Memorial is a commemorative marker placed in a public space designed to honor all men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces, drawing its symbolism from the “blue star” displayed on service flags representing a family member actively serving in the military; the National Garden Clubs primarily manage this program.
In order to raise funds for the annual student scholarships, the club has scheduled a Jersey Mike’s fundraiser on June 26, 2025 from 3 to 7pm. No special coupon is required and the club welcomes the community to participate in this effort to support the students of Adams County.
BGC invites all community members to learn, connect, and grow with us this year! The club meets on the first Tuesday of the month (March through November) at the Harbaugh-Thomas Library in Biglerville (unless advertised otherwise). Meetings start at 5:30 p.m. If you would like more information about becoming a member of the Biglerville Garden Club, please contact Christine Ecker at 717-677-9883 or cecker257@comcast.net or Christine Stoken at 717-677-8996 or email cannertennis@embarqmail.com.
