Mrs. Marge Howery, a Biglerville Elementary School Title One teacher is finding creative ways to help third-grade students strengthen their literacy skills.
This school year, Howery has planned a series of literacy-based outings and activities in partnership with the activities department at Transitions Healthcare Gettysburg. The program provides approximately 30 students with opportunities to practice language arts skills while giving residents at Transitions an opportunity to connect with local youth.
“I am very excited to partner with the activities department at Transitions to provide some meaningful opportunities for third-grade students,” Howery said.
The program is designed to create positive community connections while giving students real-life experiences that reinforce what they are learning in the classroom. Several visits are planned over the coming months. During their time at Transitions, students will meet with residents in the activity room to conduct interviews, share their writing, play games, and participate in crafts.
Reading will also be an important part of the visits. Before each outing, students will select and practice reading books that they will share with residents. They will discuss what to expect during their visit and have an opportunity to prepare and polish their reading and communication skills.
These community engagement literacy activities offer students a chance to put their classroom learning into practice in a welcoming, real-world setting. At the same time, residents can enjoy meaningful interactions with younger members of the community through shared stories, conversations, and activities. It’s a win-win for everyone involved.
