Pennsylvania State Auditor-General Eugene DePasquale, a Democrat who is running for U.S. Congress in the 10th PA Congressional District, was the special guest at Monday’s meeting of the Gettysburg College Democrats.

DePasquale talked about health care, military strength, taxation, and civil rights.

“I’m fed up with corrupt government insiders who put wealthy special interests before public service. I’m running for Congress to make a difference for our friends, our families, and our communities,” he said.

“But the hyper-partisans, corporate lobbyists, and political insiders will fight me every step of the way,” said Pasquale.

Pasquale told the story of his younger brother Anthony who was diagnosed with Muscular Dystrophy and who died while a sophomore in college. DePasquale said health insurance companies declared his disease a pre-existing condition and denied him coverage.

DePasqaule said he is in favor of making a government-run health insurance plan available to all Americans, but not forcing people out of plans they already have.

Student debt was another topic that hit home with the college audience. Pasquale said that at age 48 he is still paying off his loans for law school.

Pasquale said he grew up in a working class family in Pittsburgh, playing high school sports and having to work for everything he has.

Pasquale represented York County’s 95th District in the Pennsylvania House of Representatives between 2007 and 2013.

The 10th PA Congressional District includes York, Harrisburg, and Hershey, but not Adams County.
