Dobbin House prepares for 250th anniversary with historic property project

A major preservation and restoration project is underway along Steinwehr Avenue as part of preparations for the 250th anniversary of Gettysburg’s historic Dobbin House Tavern.

A neighboring house beside the Dobbin House has now been relocated to the rear of the property, opening the area along Steinwehr Avenue to more closely resemble the landscape as it appeared in 1776, the year the Dobbin House was built.

The project is part of a larger effort to commemorate the Dobbin House’s 250th birthday in 2026. Plans call for the creation of a public park featuring historically inspired settings and landscaping tied to the colonial-era appearance of the property.

The project will culminate on Aug. 26, 2026, with a reenactment marking exactly 250 years since Rev. Alexander Dobbin held the consecration ceremony for his newly completed home on Aug. 26, 1776.

Construction work is continuing on both the relocated house and the future park area. Preservation leaders noted that stones from the original foundation visible at the site will be reused in the relocated structure’s new foundation and in a stone wall planned within the park.

The Dobbin House is one of Gettysburg’s oldest surviving structures and remains among the borough’s best-known historic landmarks. Built by Rev. Alexander Dobbin during the Revolutionary War era, it operates today as a historic tavern and attraction visited by thousands each year.
