Thousands of Met-Ed customers in Adams County experienced a sudden power outage early Friday morning, with many residents waking up to flashing lights and a humming noise. Some suspected a fire at a nearby substation as a bluish light repeatedly lit up the night sky.
According to Met-Ed’s website, around 2,200 outages were reported in Littlestown at 8 a.m., impacting nearly 50% of customers in the area. By 9:30 a.m., that number had dropped to approximately 600 as crews worked to restore service.
A Met-Ed representative confirmed that the outage stemmed from a line failure near the Germantown substation around 12:30 a.m. While the failure initially affected 1,600 customers, additional outages were necessary to facilitate repairs. The exact cause of the failure remains under investigation.
