At the short meeting the council ratified and extended of the Declaration of Disaster Emergency initially issued by Mayor Theodore H. Streeter on March 16.

The initial declaration was valid for seven days. The council extended the emergency measures until April 27, 2020.

The disaster measures include cancelling public meetings, closing borough facilities, and working with other agencies to implement “all possible activities” to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus.

Councilmember Patti Lawson wore a face mask as she read the measure. “I am over 65 and I have asthma and so I am practicing social distancing and I hope you all are too,” said Lawson.

Closing the meeting, borough president Jake Schindel said “This is going to be a very trying time for all of us and we all need to stick together and stay at in our homes as much as possible and focus on how to not infect others as well as keeping ourselves safe.”

“Gettysburg is up to the challenge. If we could do whatever we can to keep our distance from one another and please think of others in this time of need,” said Schindel.

“There are lot of people who are not working currently and we need to keep that in mind and focus on how we can help others in their time of need,” said Schindel.
