Gettysburg Borough to unveil 13 original colony flags in Lincoln Square for America250 celebration

Gettysburg Borough will unveil a special installation of the 13 original colony flags in Lincoln Square tomorrow at 12:30 p.m., as part of the community’s ongoing commemoration of America250.

The display will feature flags representing the original thirteen colonies — Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Maryland, South Carolina, New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, North Carolina, and Rhode Island — as a tribute to the nation’s founding during the Revolutionary era.

The flags will remain on display throughout the summer and fall and are expected to serve as a centerpiece during the Lincoln at Gettysburg event scheduled for Nov. 16-20.

The project is a collaboration between the Gettysburg Garden Club and the Borough of Gettysburg. Organizers said the initiative reflects a shared commitment to civic pride, historical preservation, and community engagement.

“The Garden Club will plant red, white and blue flowers on Lincoln Square to celebrate our Country’s 250th anniversary,” said Pat Thorsen, president of the Gettysburg Garden Club. “The Club is pleased to have our residents and tourists enjoy our beautiful gardens and the flags of the thirteen original colonies.”

Gettysburg Borough Manager Charles Gable said the flag installation is one of several events planned throughout the year to mark the nation’s semiquincentennial.

“Gettysburg is uniquely positioned to commemorate America’s 250th anniversary in a way that connects our nation’s founding to its defining moments,” Gable said. “In addition to this flag installation, many organizations are planning a full calendar of events throughout the year, including expanded Fourth of July celebrations, living history programs, special exhibits, and community-wide events that invite both residents and visitors to engage with our shared history in meaningful ways.”

Organizers said the installation is expected to attract both residents and visitors while highlighting Gettysburg’s role in American history. Community members are encouraged to visit Lincoln Square and participate in America250 events taking place across Gettysburg and Adams County throughout the year.
