This past weekend, Gettysburg National Military Park hosted nearly 300 members of the Friends of Gettysburg for the 34th annual Spring Muster, an event cherished for its rich Civil War programming and unique battlefield experiences. The event lasted from April 19 to April 21, 2024, and featured talks, dinners, and tours exclusively for members of this dedicated group.
The weekend kicked off with a special dinner for members of the Guardians Society, featuring speeches by Gettysburg Foundation Interim President David Malgee and National Park Service Superintendent Kristina Heister. The programming continued with various activities both on the battlefield and at the Museum & Visitor Center, where participants engaged with Licensed Battlefield Guides and historians.

A key highlight was the exclusive tour of Little Round Top, led by National Park Service Communications Specialist Jason Martz. Members were given a preview of the site, which is currently under rehabilitation and expected to reopen to the public this summer. Martz emphasized the efforts to maintain the historic character of the site while enhancing safety and accessibility.
Bethany Yingling, Friends Membership Program Manager, highlighted the Spring Muster’s importance in reconnecting members and honoring Civil War history. “This event gives our members a chance to learn, reconnect, and remember the sacrifices of those who fought here,” she said.
The Spring Muster is a key part of the Friends of Gettysburg’s efforts to support the preservation and education goals of the Gettysburg National Military Park. The next opportunity for members to gather will be the annual Fall Muster, scheduled for October 4-5, 2024.
