Gettysburg Fire Department Hosts Open House for Fire Prevention Education

The Gettysburg Fire Department invites the community to its upcoming open house, “Fire Prevention Passport to Safety,” on Saturday, October 5, 2024, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The event will take place at the fire station, located at 35 North Stratton Street, offering an exciting opportunity for families to engage in hands-on fire safety education.

The open house will feature a variety of interactive stations designed to teach fire prevention and safety practices. Children and teens who complete nine stations on their “Passport” will be eligible to enter a drawing for prizes, including $50, $30, and $20. The age groups are divided into Child through 3rd grade and 4th through 12th grade.

– Calling 911
– Stop/Drop/Roll technique
– Fire Hose Fun
– Kitchen Safety
– Lithium Ion Battery Safety
– Fire Police awareness
– Fire Safety Trailer

Special demonstrations will also be held, including a **Vehicle Extrication Demonstration** at 2 p.m., which will showcase the skills used by emergency responders to rescue victims from vehicle accidents.

Several local organizations will also participate, including the Gettysburg Police, PennDOT, Columbia Gas, Veterans Outreach, and the Safe Kids Coalition. Educational activities will cover important topics like kitchen safety, pedestrian and bicycle safety, and campfire/wildfire safety, supported by the PA DCNR Forestry Department.

Participants can also learn about home safety through smoke alarms, home fire drills, and fire extinguisher use with a demonstration by Gettysburg College.

This family-friendly event is a great way to promote fire prevention awareness and ensure the community is prepared for emergencies. Everyone is welcome to attend for a fun and educational afternoon.
