Gettysburg flower shop reopens with a new name and passionate owner

102 Carlisle Street, former home of LocaFlora, has reopened its doors under new ownership and a fresh name—MHJ Flower Shop.

The store is owned by master gardener and landscape architect, Marann H. Jones. With her love of gardening and background in floral design, Jones has used her years of experience and passion to create this shop.

“I am a trained Landscape Architect, Floral Designer, Master Gardener, and a veteran homeschool mom,” said Jones. “The love of gardening was handed down to me from my grandmother. I enjoyed my childhood days planting cassava and all sorts of plants and veggies on her wonderful farm.”

Jones’ connection to the local community is already strong, having spent the past few years at the Adams County Farmers Market. “I’ve met all sorts of lovely people in the local area. In the process of doing what I love—growing and selling flowers—one thing led to another, and before I knew it, the opportunity to open the shop was placed providentially into my hands. I am so very thankful and excited to continue connecting with the rich community of historic Gettysburg,” she daid.

The MHJ Flower Shop offers an impressive range of fresh cut flowers, indoor and outdoor potted plants, floral arrangements for all occasions, vibrant hanging baskets, as well as landscape design services, which include consultations and plans. Visitors can also find unique gift items like handmade cards, scrunchies from a fellow vendor at the farmers market, and local lavender-scented soap, all contributing to the shop’s personal and local touch.

Stepping into the shop feels like entering another world, with plants and flowers scattered across bright walls and beneath large windows that invite natural light. “It’s so delightful to meet new faces in such a lovely space,” Jones explained, “The flowers I have placed all around just make the shop feel like a cheery indoor garden.”

When asked about her favorite flower, Jones admitted, “I do love them all, but I’m particularly fond of the delicateness of the cosmos flower.”

In addition to her work in the shop, Jones is also a published author. Her book, Four Jewels in My Crown, reflects on her experience homeschooling her three children and offers encouragement to parents navigating the challenges of home education. Sales from the book help fund a school in Liberia, which Jones continues to support through her business.

Gardening is more than just a passion for Jones – it’s deeply connected to her faith. “In the Bible, the first job God gave man was to tend the garden. Despite the thorns and hard work, there’s always beauty to be found in this creation. Gardening teaches patience, love, joy, kindness, and more, and I am so thankful to meet each season in both gardening and life.”

Jones is thrilled to expand her reach in the community. “Every plant or arrangement I sell brings color and brightness into some corner of Gettysburg, whether it’s a dorm room, office, wedding, or someone’s porch, I look forward to continuing to spread happiness with the bouquets I provide—it’s wonderful to see the smiles on my customers’ faces when they receive their favorite flowers as a gift.”

The MHJ Flower Shop also offers floral design workshops throughout the year, adding a creative and interactive element for customers. “Make sure to follow us on Facebook or Instagram (@MHJGardenDesign) to keep up-to-date with all the latest announcements,” said Jones. For more in-depth gardening advice, Marann’s YouTube series, In the Garden with Marann Jones, covers topics from native plant gardens to xeriscaping.

With the reopening of MHJ Flower Shop, Marann Jones is excited to continue sharing her love of gardening with the community, one bloom at a time.
