It’s icy this morning, which completely throws off our plans for the day.
I had an eye appointment for my AMD, but when my daughter walked out to heat up the car, she slipped and fell. Fortunately, she didn’t hurt herself badly (hurt her wrist somewhat), but that was enough to convince us to reschedule my appointment. Interesting, isn’t it, how an unanticipated change in plans can throw one off kilter? So now we both have an open morning, a gift in an often busy schedule, but instead of initially feeling grateful, we both felt at loose ends. But when I find myself feeling that way, I know it is time to practice gratitude.
Gratitude is the gift that keeps on giving, and I mean that literally.
The more we practice gratitude the easier it is to be grateful. In fact, in time, responding to life’s ups and downs with a grateful heart changes how we react and feel. Gratitude opens us to appreciate all of the experiences of life, the bitter and the sweet. Gratitude protects us from resentment and bitterness. Gratitude can soften the edges of sadness and depression. Gratitude opens us to the wonders of nature. Gratitude fosters love and kindness. Gratitude helps us see the best in ourselves and others. Gratitude doesn’t eliminate grief, but it changes it from a sense of loss to valuing what was. Gratitude opens the door to God’s unanticipated future.
I could go on and on, but that’s enough for today. I am immensely grateful that my life has led me on this journey of gratitude, which has been an integral part of my faith in God and life. I can’t think of one thing that has happened in my life (and many were painful and heartbreaking) that I would change or wish away. Each has taught me lessons I needed to learn, and each has underscored the importance of being thankful in all things.
Let me close with one of my favorite Scripture passages. It is particularly important to me as Paul writes it from prison, not when things were going well for him. He writes: “May you always be joyful in your union with the Lord. I say it again, rejoice. Show a gentle attitude toward everyone, for the Lord is coming soon. Don’t worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for all you need, always asking with a thankful heart. And God’s peace which is beyond our human understanding will keep your hearts and minds safe in Christ Jesus!.”
And let me add for those who have given up on the church. You don’t have to be a traditional believer to practice gratitude and to reap the benefits it can give you. So have a wonderful, gratitude-filled day.
