HGAC BarnArt Show & Sale begins June 9
This is an art exhibit you do not want to miss! The Historic Gettysburg Adams County Barn Preservation Project and Grant Program will present the 15th Annual BarnArt Show & Sale, beginning Friday, June 9 until Sunday, June 11, at the G.A.R. Hall, 53 East Middle Street in Gettysburg.
The BarnArt Show & Sale features works by 50 of the area’s most noted artists. To be accepted into this unique exhibit, all artworks must include a representation of a barn or a detail of a barn. This is our biggest show to date with 50 artists participating.
The Opening Night Reception on Friday, June 9 will run from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public. Award winners will be announced at 7:30 p.m. Two cash prizes of $1,000 will be awarded: one for “Best of Show in Fine Art” and one for “Best of Show in Photography;” and $500 will be awarded for second place in both categories. Opening Night attendees will again cast their votes for the “People’s Choice Award,” and participating artists will vote for the “Artists’ Choice Award.”
Exhibit hours are Friday, June 9 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday, June 10 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday, June 11 from noon until 4 p.m. Art may be purchased at any time during the show.
“Gone, But Not Forgotten”
This year, the BarnArt Show will feature a very special exhibit of photographs by Darryl Wheeler, long-time Gettysburg Times photographer. Selected from his vast collection of photographs of local barns, Darryl has chosen images of barns that are “Gone, But Not Forgotten.” The exhibit includes recent snapshots of the sites where these barns once stood, including the current site of Wal-Mart in Gettysburg. Darryl will be on hand at the G.A.R. Hall to talk about the barns and his photos on Saturday, June 10 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. (unless he’s called away on an emergency photo assignment!).
Darryl’s interest in photography began when he attended middle school in New Oxford. He explained, “Some of my first photos were of barns since they were easy to photograph and each one was different.” His photography has graced the pages of newspapers for 37 years, 11 at the Hanover Evening Sun and 26 years at the Gettysburg Times. This is the first time Wheeler’s barn photos have been exhibited publicly.
If you’re new to Gettysburg, this is a once-a-year opportunity to acquire original artwork that depicts Adams County’s rural character. With each purchase, 30 percent of sales benefit the HGAC Barn Preservation Project and Grant Program, which has provided over $76,000 for repairs to 48 Adams County barns since 2013. We hope you will join us in this celebration of our great old barns!
My advice? Don’t miss this show! It is a local event that always has wonderful barn art!
