Historic Gettysburg-Adams County Celebrates 50 Years with New Datestone

Historic Gettysburg-Adams County (HGAC) celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday, April 5, 2025, by dedicating a hand-carved datestone outside its headquarters at 53 East Middle Street in Gettysburg. The datestone project began in August 2024 when Stable Hollow Construction of Manheim, PA, generously proposed the gift in honor of the milestone.

The stone was crafted by master mason Arron Burkholder, who attended the unveiling ceremony. The event began with remarks from HGAC President Bernie Mazer, followed by a brief history of the organization presented by former board member Jackie White.

Dignitaries in attendance included State Representative Toren Ecker and Adams County Commissioner Jim Martin. Representatives from Stable Hollow Construction were also present, including owner Henry Stoltzfus, sales manager Leroy Stoltzfus, and Burkholder, the artisan behind the stone.

HGAC is committed to the restoration and preservation of historic and architecturally significant structures in Gettysburg and Adams County. Over the years, the organization has supported projects ranging from the repair of historic barns to educational programs like the Bonnie Braun Memorial Investing in Youth Initiative, which fosters an appreciation for preservation among younger generations.

A centerpiece of HGAC’s work is the ongoing restoration of the Grand Army of the Republic Building, a 203-year-old landmark that now serves as HGAC’s headquarters. The new datestone serves as a lasting symbol of the organization’s enduring mission and dedication to local history.
