Happy New Year! January brings some refreshing new art events to our community including curated short films from the Telluride Film Festival, an exhibit of Ansel Adams photographs, the premiere concert of conductor Ryan Kozak with the Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra, and community favorite “Dancing With the Local Stars”. Bring a friend or two and enjoy something new during the first month of 2024.
Wednesday January 3-31 – In the Gallery Adams County Arts Council
A new year brings new exhibits at the ACAC including works by Wanda Snader DeHan in the Gallery, Gettysburg High School Students of Julie Myers in the Reception Hall, and Collective Rogue Art in the Studio. Admission is free. Check the website for hours.
Friday January 5 at 7:00 pm – Poetry First Friday Ragged Edge Coffeehouse
Join our local poets as they welcome Mark Drew, editor of the Gettysburg Review. Drew will read a selection of poems he published in the storied journal during his tenure as editor. The program begins with an open mic at 7 pm, followed by the featured reader. Bring a poem to share if you wish and grab some coffee or delicious baked goods at the Ragged Edge before going upstairs. Friday January 12 at 7:00 pm – Dancing With the Local Stars Majestic Theater
Presented by Wellspan Health, this annual amateur dancing competition is produced by and supports the YWCA OF Gettysburg/Adams County and Adams County Arts Council. For this 10th anniversary performance, area celebrities who were past winners and their professional choreographers are returning to show off their championship moves. Special guests include Edge Dance Complex and Tony Mercado. Lisa Cadigan emcees the evening. Tickets are $49/$45/$39 and support many good causes.
January 12 and 13 at 7 pm and January 14 at 2 pm – Let It Be Gettysburg Community Theatre
This celebration of music by The Beatles is directed by Carrie and Dave Conklin. If you enjoy the music of the Beatles – and who doesn’t? – you won’t want to miss this production. Tickets available online ($15) or at the door ($20), if any seats are left.

Sunday January 14 at 4:00 pm – Gettysburg Chamber Orchestra United Lutheran Seminary
Under the baton of conductor Ryan Kozak, the GCO goes Baroque in the beautiful and intimate setting of the Church of the Abiding Presence. The Baroque Ensemble, with vocalist Margaret Folkemer-Leonard, will perform works by well-known composers like Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Handel, and Telemann while also presenting some lesser-known composers such as Provenzale, Frescobaldi, and Cavalli. This concert is presented by Music, Gettysburg! so admission is free, freewill offerings are gratefully accepted, and there is plenty of free parking.
Friday January 19 at 7:30 pm – Robert Burns Night United Lutheran Seminary
Music, Gettysburg! presents an evening of music and poetry celebrating the national poet of Scotland, Robert Burns. Local Celtic band Cormorant’s Fancy and narrator Jeffrey Greenawalt will lead the celebration in the Refectory of the Seminary. Free admission, freewill offerings gratefully accepted, and plenty of free parking.
Friday January 19 at 7:30 pm – Mountainfilm on Tour Majestic Theater
Be ready to enjoy an evening of adventure-packed, culturally rich, and inspiring documentary short films curated from the annual Mountainfilm Festival held each May in Telluride, CO. These films endeavor to use the power of film, art, and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door.
Monday January 22 at Noon and 7:00 pm – Great Art on Screen Majestic Theater
This series of event documentaries features an in-depth look at the most groundbreaking art masters of their time. Jeff Koons, a native of York, PA, is widely regarded as one of the most influential, popular, and disputed artists of the last 30 years. This film will show the hidden mechanisms lying behind the person, the artist and the Koons brand. It investigates his roots in York and follows him to New York City and beyond. Tickets are $18.
Sunday January 28 at 4:00 pm – Jeffrey Fahnestock, Tenor United Lutheran Seminary
The acclaimed tenor Jeffrey Fahnestock returns to the Music, Gettysburg! 2024 season for an afternoon of stunning artistry. The theme of the program is a Grand Tour of Europe with references and influences of at least nine countries including Dvorak’s Gypsy Songs, French songs by Gabriel Faure and Maurice Ravel, and Shakespeare settings by Gerald Finzi, Roger Quilter, and Franz Schubert. Professor Fahnestock will be accompanied by Naomi Niskala of Susquehanna University. Admission is free, with freewill offerings gratefully accepted, and plenty of free parking is available.
Wednesday January 31-April 13 – Ansel Adams: Manzanar Schmucker Art Gallery
In the Gettysburg College Art Gallery this collection of photographs by Ansel Adams, one of America’s most well-known photographers, documents the Manzanar Relocation Center in 1943. Under the direction of Interim Gallery Director, Kate Gillespie, students Emma Wylan ’24 and Sophia Crawford ’24 have curated this important historical document of 50 prints that details the every day lives of the Japanese-Americans who were interned at Manzanar. The Schmucker Art Gallery is located inside Schmucker Hall on N. Washington Street. Free admission and open to the public. Gallery hours are Tuesday – Saturday from 10 am -4 pm.
