More COVID-19 Cases on Gettysburg College Campus Create Complete Lockdown

After finding 33 cases on campus in the first two weeks of classes, the college reported in an email to the campus community that it has already found 25 more after testing only 348 students in the past two days.

Officials said the majority of the new cases were related to “previously identified clustered incidents,” but that there had been “a small number of cases” outside of these clusters.

It has been reported that the earlier cases were predominately among members of campus sororities and fraternities.

In response to the spike the college has moved to a “high” alert level and quarantined all students in their rooms as of 10:00 p.m. tonight for at least the remainder of the week.

All classes will be conducted remotely.

Authorities told students they must remain in their rooms except to pick up food from campus purveyors, use the restroom, or go to scheduled COVID-19 testing appointments.

Students found to be in non-compliance with the residential restrictions will be required to return home immediately.

The 58 cases reported on the campus since students returned in mid-August have significantly added to the COVID-19 case count in Adams County, and now account for about nine percent of the county’s 648 total cases.

Campus officials did not immediately indicate whether the new infected students would be housed in local motels as some of the earlier cases have been.
