After graduating from Gettysburg High School in 1971, Randy went on to earn a bachelorâs degree from Albright College in Reading, PA where he was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. Throughout his schooling and after graduation, he returned home to Gettysburg to work for the family business, Mason Dixon Farms Dairy. He later began his career selling life insurance and providing financial planning services.
Randy was a loving, hardworking, and supportive father. His knowledge, advice, and guidance provided a strong foundation for his family, friends, and many others in the community. He was a lifetime resident of Adams County, member of St. James Lutheran Church in Gettysburg, and a contributing attendee at Lower Marsh Creek Church. He coached many of his childrenâs youth soccer teams and spent a number of years volunteering and providing leadership to Gettysburg AYSO, was a founding father of the Gettysburg Youth Soccer Club and The Complex Group, which endeavored to build a self-sufficient, independent, permanent home turf for community youth soccer programs. Randy also refereed numerous youth, high school, and adult level soccer and lacrosse games. In his free time he enjoyed staying active playing racquetball, tennis, biking, skiing, riding his motorcycle and spending time with his family. He was a member of the Optimist Club of Gettysburg, actively serving as the treasurer at the time of his death.
Randy is survived by his wife of 11 years, Phyllis Doyle Smith, his daughter, Sonja Brown and husband Ken, his son Jacob Smith and wife Christy, his son Benjamin Smith and wife Abby, and his step-daughter Katie Doyle and her fiancé William Denell. He is survived by 7 grandchildren: Kennedy, Stratton, Riley, Garrett, Jackson, Hayden, and Kellan. Randy is also survived by 35 nieces and nephews, and 11 siblings: his sister Carole Smith, sister Jamie Shaffer and husband Gary, brother Gary and wife Kathy, brother Kirby and wife Vicki, brother Bradley and wife Cyndi, brother Eric and wife Colleen, brother Brent and wife Karen, sister Judy Wilson and husband Steve, brother Kirk and wife Amy, brother Perry and wife Joanne, and brother Sheldon and wife Nancy.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted at St. James Lutheran Church on Saturday, January 20 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday from 1:00 PM until the time of the service.
