Opinion Letter About UASD and ILC

I write to ask that all residents of the Upper Adams School District consider attending the Upper Adams
School District School Board meeting on Tuesday, 16 July, 2024 at 7:00pm.

The location is not set yet, but it will likely be in the Biglerville High School Auditorium, 161 North Main St, Biglerville, PA 17307, where it has been for the June and May, 2024 meetings, in order to accommodate the atypical larger crowds of community members in attendance.

The reason for the increased community interest is the possibility of our school board engaging the Independence Law Center (ILC). There is a large, vocal, and varied group of very concerned community members, teachers, students, alumni, and parents who do NOT wish for any involvement with the ILC, as it is recognized as an affiliate of a larger organization that the Southern Poverty Law Center has identified as a hate group. As well, there has been no cause or call for any outside consultation or guidance from within the district for this or any other counsel, other than from one newly-elected board member reaching out prior to her election, to ask questions and initiate communication. We are UASD residents, as well as parents of three BHS alumni, and we are gravely concerned for the very safety, well-being, and educational health of the marginalized students at great risk of further harm from the policies the ILC uses school board puppets to push through. We are (somewhat less) concerned that our small, rural community may face sharp tax increases or decreased student extra-curricular programs, once these policies pass and the “pro-bono” promises of ILC have disappeared, and our budget must cover the legal fees and settlements that will undoubtedly follow in the wake of these egregious breaches of public education services and policies.

Do Upper Adams taxpayers really want to spend $1.5M on legal and public relations fees?? After the Central Bucks School District accepted and implemented the anti-LGBTQ+ policies of the Independence Law Center (ILC), the school district then needed to hire another law firm to defend itself against the lawsuits the ACLU brought against it. The lesson is: bring in the ILC and the taxpayers will suffer increased costs of 100’s of thousands of dollars in legal fees. Oh, and Central Bucks School District voters swept out the Moms for Liberty board members in favor of Democrat ones who are LGBTQ+-inclusive.… Read more »
