According to Gettysburg Area Salvation Army chair Amy Smith, there were eleven pallets on the truck, with foods including peanut butter, cereal, dry pasta, canned fruit, canned soups, cookies, meat ravioli, macaroni and cheese, granola, canned vegetables, spaghetti sauce, ingredients for chili, and more.

The food was donated by the Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services.

Food is available from the SCCAP food pantry, located at 153 N. Stratton St. The pantry is open Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 9:00 to noon and 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. During the Covid-19 crisis, a pre-packed bag of food will be placed in your car. Do not get out of your car.

To access these services, call Lisa Beaver at SCCAP at 717-334-7634, extension 131. Listen to the recording on the answering machine about the food pantry hours, then leave a message. Be sure to include your name, phone number, and the type of help you need. Someone from the Salvation Army will get back to you as soon as possible, hopefully within 24 hours.

Smith asked people to donate to the Salvation Army. “Things such as pallets of canned goods, the gasoline for the truck. etc. are not free,” said Smith. “In natural disasters such as hurricanes, people reach for their checkbooks. That is not happening now.”

Contributors may mail in donations by sending them to The Salvation Army, 153 N. Stratton Street, Gettysburg, PA  17325, or may contact Mary S. Smith at 717-968-4602 or via email at mjsmith2@aol.com

“As with all donations to the Salvation Army, unless specified by the donor that the money is for a specific purpose, the funds are deposited in the account of the service unit that corresponds with the donor’s zip code. Funds from Gettysburg go to Gettysburg,” said Smith.
