Understanding the Importance of Municipal Elections

On Tuesday, November 4, we have our next municipal election. While municipal elections are vital for the health and vibrancy of our community, most registered voters don’t show up to vote. While national and state-level elections attract the most attention, it is the municipal elections — covering local offices such as mayor, township supervisor, school board members, the sheriff, tax collector, and judges — that have the most direct impact on our everyday lives.

Municipal officials are responsible for decisions that affect essential public services like police and fire protection, waste management, water supply, road maintenance, parks, electricity, and solar panels. The leaders we choose in these elections determine how our tax dollars are spent and set priorities for services that shape the quality of life in our communities.

School board members approve budgets, set school tax rates, and set educational policies that influence everything from curriculum choices to school buildings and safety initiatives.

The passage and enforcement of local ordinances — covering issues like zoning, property taxes, business permitting, environmental protection, and future development — are decided by the people we elect. Your vote can influence how your community develops, the types of businesses that operate locally, and the preservation of public spaces.

Municipal elections allow us to hold local leaders accountable and ensure our voices are heard on matters closest to home. Because voter turnout is typically lower in municipal contests, each vote carries more weight, making individual participation even more significant.

If you are new to Adams County, note that the last day to register to vote in the next election is October 20. The county’s Board of Elections is at 230 Greenamyer Lane. Another important date to know is October 28, the last day to apply for a mail-in or absentee ballot for the November election. To ensure your mail-in or absentee ballot is counted, the Board of Elections must receive your ballot by 8 p.m. on election day.

On Tuesday, November 4, we have our next municipal election. You can play a crucial role in shaping the everyday experiences of your community. Please vote!
