The Chicago White Sox broke the modern Major League Baseball record for futility by losing their 121st game over the weekend. Their record-breaking defeat in their 162-game schedule was one more than the 1962 New York Mets accumulated in their inaugural season. Just before the turn of the century and what is considered the modern baseball era, the hapless 1899 Cleveland Spiders lost 134 games in a season. The White Sox did manage to finish on a positive note with a win on Sunday, the season’s final day, defeating the playoff-bound Detroit Tigers, 9-5.
