Gettysburg Connection is proud to share weekly “behind the scenes” stories from the Adams County Library System. The library serves all 100,000 Adams County residents and offers us each so much. Which library do you use and how do you use it? Will you leave a comment to show your support?

Behind the Scenes at the Adams County Library: Library by Mail

Tell your friends

Happy New Year!

I want to give a big thanks to Gettysburg Connection publisher Chuck Stangor for giving the Adams County Library System (ACLS) the opportunity to share news from the library!  We’ll be contributing an article every Monday throughout 2022.

We’ll use these articles to share a weekly “look behind the scenes” at the Library System.  We’ll be sharing with you what really happens at the headquarters library in Gettysburg and how those activities support the other five locations and the virtual branch. Who does what?  What services and programs are offered?

Throughout the year, many staff members will be contributing to this space in an effort to highlight the backstory of the Library System.  I hope readers will learn more about the ACLS and the many interesting and free library services and programs the ACLS offers.  In turn, I hope that residents will use one or more of the libraries more often and in many ways!

Today, I’d like to highlight the Library by Mail service.  Library by Mail is a program facilitated by Sara Edmiston, the Public Services Librarian at the Gettysburg branch.  The ACLS offers Library by Mail to Adams County residents who cannot visit a library branch due to a temporary or permanent health issue.  There is no charge to participate.  Library books, audiobooks and DVDs are sent to Library by Mail participants via USPS with return postage included.

Library users can request general subject areas to guide staff who select items or choose to request specific titles or authors.  This free program is an important way we provide library services to all Adams County residents.  Residents can register for this service at any of the six library facilities or online via our website.  If you need a library card, you can register for one at the same time!

If you or someone you know would benefit from the Library by Mail program, you can register online at www.adamslibrary.org  (click the SERVICES tab and then on Library by Mail) or call any branch of the Adams County Library System and a library staff member will help you.

Branches are located throughout the county:  Gettysburg 717-334-5716; Biglerville 717-677-6257; Carroll Valley 717-642-6009; East Berlin 717-259-9000; Littlestown Library 717-359-0446; New Oxford 717-624-2182.
