Climate change

Last evening, my daughter and I snuggled down on the sofa and binge-watched one of the Masterpiece series.  After she went home, I continued watching a series on climate change…one of those scientific studies that scare the bejeebers out of you yet gives you hope.  One thing is clear.  Despite computer projections, no one really knows what lies ahead as we’ve already passed the tipping point, and temperatures just keep rising.  Today is Nov 2.  Yesterday, the temps reached the high 80’s, and today, it has cooled down to the 70’s, still way too warm for November.   But that does not negate the fact that it’s a beautiful day in South Central Pa.  While I worry about the future facing my children and grandchildren, let alone my great-grands, I am determined to enjoy this day the Lord is giving me.

One of the hopeful bits of information I gleaned from the program is that we already have the technology to go all-electric everywhere in the world and that electricity can be generated by natural sources…sun, wind, water, etc.  Not only that, but naturally produced power is now cheaper than that produced by fossil fuels.  The reason we are not doing so is greed.  Pure and simple greed.  Just as the falsehoods that pass for news on Fox News and other platforms are all motivated by greed.  No wonder Jesus said we can’t serve two masters; either we will love one and hate the other.  We absolutely can’t serve both God and money.

With the election only days away,  worry only makes me miserable.  I could easily work myself up into a frenzy of worry, but I have learned over my lifetime that it doesn’t change anything.  Again I think of Jesus’ caution that worry can’t make us any taller, and for a shrimp like me that is reassuring.   I am very concerned about global warming and all of the climate deniers, but since my worry won’t change things, I am committed to making the most of this day while  I try to conserve water and other resources.  If we each did our little bit…driving less and walking more, turning off the TV, and quitting scrolling on our cell phones, we’d pay more attention to the common sense God gave us.

Thursday, our Geriatrics for Justice had our little demonstration holding up our positive signs.  I wore my dinosaur costume, proclaiming that love and justice are not extinct.  Others had signs that reminded folks that hope is not extinct.   We may or may not save the world as we know it, but one thing is clear.  God is in charge, and He has created amazing life after other seeming disasters, like when the asteroid struck the earth, destroying most life, or the ice age altered life as it had been. Knowing that I can go to bed at night and sleep.  God is in control, and that’s good enough for me.
