Incoming Executive Director Lisa Pratt guides the Gettysburg YMCA toward growth and change

For Lisa Pratt, the new Executive Director of the Gettysburg branch of the Hanover Area YMCA, the “Y” is more than a community center—it’s a way of life.

Having been part of the Hanover Area YMCA for 25 years, Pratt said she understands the vital role the Y plays in shaping young lives and strengthening community bonds. “My kids grew up in the YMCA culture. I know what the Y did for them,” she said.

“I truly understand what our young people are getting out of it, and I want to ensure they have even more opportunities to contribute to the world. The YMCA community helps people thrive and to become socially responsible,” she said.

Pratt will be at the helm of substantial changes to the former YWCA going forward.

The Hanover Area YMCA has long been a pillar in the Hanover area, serving branches in North Hanover, South Hanover, and Littlestown. With the recent dissolution of the Gettysburg YWCA and a takeover by the Hanover YMCA, their mission will be expanded.

Pratt said that although they are separate organizations, the YMCA shares many goals with the YWCA. “We have a shared mission—providing opportunities for people of all ages to grow and connect,” Pratt said. “Our goal is to continue being a resource that strengthens our community and supports programs for all”

Pratt said three individuals have joined the Hanover YMCA Board of Directors to represent Gettysburg. Jane Lordeman, CFP (Retired) Lordeman Associates, Denise Woods, COO (Retired) American Institute of Graphic Arts Headquarters and Kurt Kramer, CEO (Retired) YMCA & YMCA of the USA Consultant.

Pratt noted that membership at the Gettysburg Y now includes access to the other three branches as well and said that programming at the Gettysburg branch would increase.  “Expanded programming is the key to sustainability and growth. Programming creates value for members. The stronger the offerings, the more people will want to be here,” she said.

One of the most anticipated changes is the introduction of a “ChildWatch” program, which allows parents to leave their children in supervised care while they exercise or take classes. The YMCA is also expanding its offerings for youth, including the creation of a youth center where children can engage in activities in a safe and welcoming environment.

Perhaps the most noticeable changes in the next months will be significant renovations of the facility.

“We want the Gettysburg branch to look and feel more like the North Hanover branch,” Pratt said. “That means an open lobby area, improved lighting, fresh paint, and a better use of available spaces.”

The upcoming improvements will begin with painting and lighting updates indoors, and an outdoor landscaping project to resolve issues of water intrusion on the east side of the building. The work will enhance accessibility and create a more inviting atmosphere for members and guests.

The major contractor for the work is Conewago Construction.

Pratt said the new position was a great fit for her, and that she is committed to creating an inclusive environment where the values of the YMCA and the YWCA thrive together.

Pratt said she and her husband have long been discussing the possibility of becoming Gettysburg residents. They have already begun working with a local realtor and look forward to becoming part of the Gettysburg community very soon.

Adams County residents appreciate and support our Y. Welcome Lisa and we hope you find this new challenge rewarding and FUN. Your Gettysburg board members are knowledgeable and supportive of this institution and will use their exceptional skills to move the Y forward. We can’t imagine our community without a Y and hope the members share their support and assistance when asked!
