The Civics Teacher or the Seditionist? We’ll Decide

The Gettysburg area lies in PA Senate District 33. We are currently represented by Doug Mastriano, who has been in the seat since June 2019. He’s most famous for his attempts to overturn the 2020 Presidential election results and his related leadership role in the January 6th riot.

His opponent is Cameron Schroy of Greencastle, a lifelong resident of Franklin County and a Civics teacher Waynesboro.

This sets up an ironic question: do you want to be represented by a Civics teacher or someone who wanted to throw out your votes to enthrone his preferred candidate?

Let’s delve into Mastriano’s anti-democratic behavior.

Between the election and the January 6 certification, Mastriano:

-Wrote to the Justice Department spreading debunked claims of fraud.

-Organized an unofficial “hearing” in Gettysburg, at which Trump and Rudy Giuliani made false claims about election fraud.

-Spent more than $3,000 from his campaign account to charter buses to Washington ahead of the January 6 “Stop the Steal” rally that preceded the attack on the Capitol.

These transgressions were reported in real time, and memorialized in  the US Senate Judiciary Committee report on the 2020 election, which states:

“Doug Mastriano, a Republican State Senator…participated in Rudy Giuliani’s so-called election fraud ‘hearings,’ spent thousands of dollars from his campaign account to bus people to the January 6 ‘Save America Rally,’ and was present on the Capitol grounds as the insurrection unfolded…like Perry [our district’s US Rep at the time], Mastriano directly communicated with [the Department of Justice]…about his false election fraud claims….He and his wife took part in the January 6 insurrection, with video footage confirming that they passed through breached barricades and police lines at the US Capitol”.

Defending his January 6 involvement, Mastriano said: “When it was apparent that this was no longer a peaceful protest, my wife and I left the area and made our way out of the area. At no point did we enter the Capitol building, walk on the Capitol steps, or go beyond police lines.”

But many who have searched videotape of the riot call his claims into question (WHYY: https://whyy.org/articles/new-video-appears-to-show-state-sen-mastriano-closer-to-capitol-riot-than-he-said/).

On the other hand, the Civics teacher Schroy lists “Protecting democracy” among his top 3 legislative priorities. What that means to him is to: “… fight every effort to repeal mail-in voting, reduce access to drop boxes, or hinder your constitutional right to vote in any way,” and “getting big money out of politics once and for all.”

To me, the answer is clear. I’m voting for the Civics teacher — Cameron Schroy. He’ll respect the will of the voters, and – unlike Mastriano – won’t substitute his will for ours.
